Atticus triumph in the Cup

Aigburth 2  ½-5½  Atticus, John Ripley Final, Aigburth CC, May 9 2012

Adding to our victories in Divisions One and Two, Atticus last night retained the John Ripley Cup. It was a match of reverses - at least as far as openings went. Andrej faced a reversed Leningrad Dutch, Dave Lawson played a reversed Sicilian Kan, while my game morphed into a reversed King's Indian Attack. There were some more conventional openings too: First to finish was Luke - his brisk demolition of the Taimanov is annotated below -while Dave James was surprised, but not floored, by Nick unleashing the Classical Dutch. Not quite so conventional was Charlie's attempt to play a proper Noteboom which his opponent chose to cross with an odd mixture of e4 and g3. Charlie achieved a stable pawn advantage but faced difficulties in the conversion phase, when a theme of opposite-coloured bishops emerged. It was, then, a somewhat one-sided match, although Aigburth 2 fought hard against the odds, as they had done all season in Division One.

ATTICUS WIN JOHN RIPLEY CUP

A big night at Aigburth as Atticus won a trophy which has eluded us for some years: The John Ripley Cup. We also retained the Knotty Ash Cup (report to follow) and were victorious in the play-off for places in the same competition. The score against Hoylake was lop-sided, but Hoylake had a 1½ point start, and only needed 2½ points on the night. It seemed certain for a while that they were going to get at least 2 points, as David Lawson and Enayet both ran into degrees of trouble. David on Board 1 had a poor English structure with doubled h pawns against David Tebb. Enayet, meanwhile, had engaged in some speculative piece offerings and went from being two minor pieces down for a somewhat impressionistic attack, to having a lone rook against his opponent's queen and ominously numerous pawns. It looked as if we were going to have to win on all four other boards. Luke had scored an early victory on the White side of a Closed Sicilian structure, while David James had a heavy piece 'ending' (Q+R) where he enjoyed the crucial advantage of the safer King. Andrej was a little better on the Black side of a Na6 Orthodox King's Indian and had got a grip on the crucial d4 square. I didn't have much on the Black side of a somewhat stodgy London system and was worried it would be hard to create winning chances. In the end, though, Enayet made up for his emphatic material disadvantage through his equally emphatic time advantage - his opponent found the clock pressure too much. David Lawson ventured an exchange sac and neutralised his opponent's advantage for a draw. Dave James had won too to put us on 3½ points. This took the pressure off the last two matches and, in the end, Andrej and myself managed two close victories. Bad luck for Hoylake who really did have their chances, but, together with the Knotty Ash triumph, a great result for us.

Atticus beat Littlewoods in John Ripley Cup, March 7 2011

Atticus advance to final

Atticus 6-4½ Littlewoods
D.Lawson 1-0 P Woodfindon
J. Redmond 1-0 D. Whitby
E Hossain 1-0 G. Davies
A Stancak 1-0 J Langham
D Odunaiya 1-0 P Green
F. Boyd 1-0 T. Guiver

Atticus won their semi-final against Littlewoods in the John Ripley Cup last night. As Littlewoods are in Division 5, they had a 4½ 'start'. This meant that, in order to win the tie, they only needed one point from the six games. However, Atticus played efficiently and there were quick wins for Frank and David Odunaiya. In the longest, and probably best, of the games, Paul Woodfindon put up quite some resistance on Board 1, but his King's Indian Attack eventually ran into a kind of strategic zugzwang against David Lawson's enterprising positional pawn sac.
