Another match where we were hopelessly out-graded. There were some close games but inevitably Liverpool were just too strong for us.

Mike Williams had a very tough game against Raimund Klein, who, despite being ungraded is a clearly a very strong player. The MCA website appears to estimate his grade at 166, presumably based on the limited number of games played this season (2 in Division 2: 1 win on Bd 3 and 1 draw on Bd 1; 3 in Div 3; all won and now 1 on Bd 1 in the 600L also won). Mike gave a good account of himself but was unable save the game.

Howard also gave a good account of himself against Tomas Lancaric but again his opponent proved too strong.

I have always been given a hard time of it by Dave Leeming over the years and tonight was no exception. We had a an exciting match but my position became over-exposed when I tried to press home an attack that simply bit on granite and that was that.

Dave Hurley, in his own words, got minced by Diego Agejas (another player ungraded at the start of the season but who has a January grade of 142!).

Despite having had a late withdrawal and being a board down, the strength of the Aigburth team prevailed, running out the winners. The games were close but even after Howard’s early draw  (well  played to him!), Aigburth always looked the more likely to take the full 2 points.

Mike looked like he might have drawing chances at one point which would have halved the match but it was not to be and Dave Pearey always seemed to have at least the edge in my game. Once we went into an endgame with me a pawn down it was a question of technique and Dave comfortably executed this to win.

Atticus 3 played White on the Odd Boards

Another close encounter but another loss unfortunately.

Atticus 1-600 had chances to at least draw the match but in the end  Widnes 600 prevailed.

Mike Williams, despite winning the exchange, nonetheless found himself in a difficult position against Tom Dugdale. The two of them fought it out to the last but Mike was unable to save the game against Tom’s positional advantage.

Chris Wentworth also won the exchange by force and was, perhaps, better.  However, over the board, the position appeared unclear and the pair of them agreed a draw.

I had a solid position against Phil Coughlin’s French Defence and also Black’s IQP as a long-term target. Patience was the key and after a drawn out positional battle the game suddenly exploded into life. This suited me and with Phil short on time I was able to manufacture a winning advantage which I pressed home.

Dave Hurley came under the sword of Gareth Ellis early on and, despite struggling manfully, always looked like he was second best. The end game proved decisive where Gareth’s Bishop pair ruled the roost over Dave’s Rook.

Quite a tough opener for our 600L campaign but we put up a good performance against Prescot before going under.

Dave Owens and I had a fairly quick draw to kick things off. Howard was doing really well against Mike O’Mahoney and looked like he was getting the better of it. However, he had just returned from San Francisco that day and jet-lag got to him at the critical moment.

Dave Hurley also appeared to be doing OK but went wrong somewhere in the mix.

Our one shining light was Mike Williams who started off with a big attack against Kevin Sartain. Kevin, as ever, put up stout resistance but in the end succumbed to pressure and missed the threatened mating net until it was too late.
