Excellent Win for Atticus 2 23/2/17

Atticus 2 came in as clear favourites for this game with one of the strongest team lineups in many years. However the match was fairly close at the half way stage as a useful Wallasey team appeared to have a slight advantage on boards 1,4 and 8. However Giovanni,Steve and Giorgos turned things around in the final stages for some important wins. On the other boards Tom Bimpson seemed to have an immediate advantage out of the opening and kept up the pressure for an early excellent victory. David Lawson also looked to be in control throughout. David Odunaiya's game looked fairly equal until a fine end game finish.  Dave Healiss dropped a rare loss after turning down the draw in a difficult position. Andrej who had been suffering with a virus had a draw with Jeff Povall. Final score 6.5/1.5.The team stay on top of Division 1 but still have some tough games to play.

Atticus 1 came close to overcoming the much higher-rated Atticus 2 side, but couldn't quite get over the line. The critical game turned out to be on Board 5 where John Lambert was winning for much of the game - with 2 Bishops versus 2 Knights in a relatively open position. Unfortunately, he fell behind on the clock and, at the end, he had a chance to win a piece but seemed to get distracted by a passed a-pawn. With that chance gone he was run off the clock. Jim Wiseman was also clearly winning at the end of his game but, by his own account, forgot that he had an extra piece and so, luckily for his opponent, agreed a draw. Dave James and Andrej followed in the footsteps of some of the Kasparov v Karpov QGDs from the 1980s. Andrej got a passive position with a backward c-pawn but Dave delayed the thematic e4 breakthrough and by the time he did play it, experienced a sharp tactical rebound. Martin also lost. Nick and Steve Kee played out a very steady draw, with neither player risking too much. Brian and Tom also split the points. Mike Williams played an unusual opening against Nigel but always looked more comfortable. Meanwhile on Board 1, in the only game using the (progressive!) Fischer time-controls, I got quite a bad opening and had to scramble to get some tactical chances. In a complicated position, both sides then turned down draw-offers, and, at one point I got down to my last second. But the clock-pressure eventually told on Giovanni and he lost on time. So Atticus 2 march on, and are still well in the hunt for the top spot.

Atticus 3 Result Card

Atticus 2 CC played White on the Odd Boards

Game 10,  against Atticus 2.  Another tough match in prospect and so it proved.

Howard was unavailable for this one but we had a strong replacement in Liam Cadigan.

Atticus 2 maintained their good form and Atticus 3 struggled as a consequence.

Dave Healiss (v Andej Stancak) and Liam Cadigan (v Dave Stuttard) both put in strong performances to gain well-earned draws.

The rest of us went under. Some of the games were close with some interesting positions arising but all in all Atticus 2 proved too strong on the night.

Next Game is on the 3rd March at HOME to Wallasey A (Note that Atticus 1 have a rearranged fixture with Formby so it will be a full house again down at the Caledonian).

Jim Wiseman (Atticus 3 Captain)
