Our final game of the season was something of a crunch match. We were level with three other teams on 8 points and Southport were propping up the division with 7 points, They were playing Widnes 2 at home on the same night.

Great result despite being weakened by a late withdrawal on Board 2.

Southport fielded a very strong team and we were heavily out-graded on all boards. Nonetheless this was an excellent team performance coming out honours even against all the odds.

Luke had a very exciting game against Minas and came out  of the opening better. Unfortunately, he went wrong somewhere and came under considerable pressure which was instrumental in him losing a piece. Close game though and it could easily have gone to us.

Howard was the unfortunate sacrificial lamb. It’s tough enough for him (or me) playing on Board 3. But once we’re asked to play on Board 2 in this division it is always going to be difficult to extract anything at all. So it proved although Howard gave his best.

My game was the last to finish and after withstanding a big attack from Fergal I managed to hold the position sufficient for the draw which kept the match level on the night.

Steve Philp, our replacement for Mike, had a terrific result against Karl Nadin who has been playing well this season. He was second last to finish and we needed a win from him to get any kind of result. He won the exchange and despite some good counter-play by Karl he did enough to take the full point.

Tom Webb and John Lawton (standing in for Natasha who we released to play for Atticus 5 on the night picked up solid draws.

Finally Dave Hurley won his game which was a good result for him and the team.

Well played everyone. Jim Wiseman (Captain)

Another close encounter that could have gone either way but in the end went to Widnes.

Luke  appeared to have a comfortable win on Bd1. Mike had a very hard game which went to the wire and won when his opponent  went wrong under time pressure. Howard had a difficult game after dropping a pawn early on. He made a game of it though and only went down after a tough fight. I was somewhat fortunate to win  in a very sharp, tense game against Mal French who lucked out after a moment of chess blindness. John Lawton, standing in for Tom Webb, lost early on. I didn’t see his game but Ian (his opponent) said it was one of those games where nothing much is up for grabs but then one pawn drops after which several others quickly follow. Dave looked like he was doing OK and thought he was heading for a draw but completely missed the power of his opponent’s attack. Natasha was having the best of it against Lee Walls and probably should have won. However, she misplayed her Rook v 3 pawns ending and allowed Lee to get an unstoppable pawn roller in to seal the match.

So again, a close match, played in good spirit with Widnes taking the honours on the night.

A great result for us although, unfortunately for them, Widnes 2 started a player down.

Some very close encounters but we managed to keep our noses in front.

Luke Boumphrey had what looked like a comfortable win on Board 1 although afterwards he said that Mike Connor missed one opportunity to level the position. Mike Williams took a draw for the team (virtually ensuring the win for us on the night) in a complex position. I didn’t see much of Howard’s game but he eventually went under to Gareth Ellis. Mal and I had a willd encounter which, when the storm blew itself out, left an opposite coloured Bishops ending from which a draw was agreed. Tom Webb had an exciting game against Harry Draper. There were plenty of traps for both sides but once Tom secured the open files with his Rooks the game was his for the taking. Steve Burge came unstuck against L.Walls which was something of a surprise but well played to Mr. Walls all the same. And, with Widnes defaulting Board 7 we won the match 4-3.

Another fiercely contested match but this time one which went our way!

Luke thought he was comfortably winning until Kevin delivered a telling sac from which he was perhaps unfortunate not to win. In  the end a draw was agreed although Luke thought Kevin was better.

Mike Williams and Mike O’Mahoney had a tight struggle that also ended drawn.

Howard seemed to have the better of it for much of his game against Dave Delaney but this, too, ended drawn.

Dave Owens managed to get a winning advantage in another complicated Smith Morra against me. For a while it looked like I met get something out of having 3 pawns for the piece but Dave kept finding the correct continuation to win.

Steve Burge, who stood in for Natasha at the last minute when she went down with a flu-type illness, had an impressive 18 move crush against Frank McClean.

Tom Webb came out of the opening worse but turned the tables in the middle- and end-game to win against Mike Delaney.

And Dave Hurley made sure of our victory with a stunning finish, despite having dropped a piece earlier on against Bob Amos.

A good win for us then and an excellent team effort.
