MATCH RESULT

4 - 3

** = January 2017 Grade (Ungraded in August 2016)

Our final game of the season was something of a crunch match. We were level with three other teams on 8 points and Southport were propping up the division with 7 points, They were playing Widnes 2 at home on the same night.

Formby 1 of course, were already confirmed Division 2 Champions with a runaway score having only dropped a single half-point in their previous 11 matches. Realistically, we needed Widnes to do a job on Southport if we were to avoid relegation.

Howard was unavailable and Martin Blasczyk was his replacement on the night. We would be out-graded on all boards and heavily out-graded on all bar Board 1.

Well, we lost but only by the narrowest of margins. This was possibly our finest team performance of the season and we came very close to pulling off some kind of a result.

Dave Hurley (out-graded by 35 points) was a piece up and winning against Chris Fisher. However, Chris found a tactic which  regained the piece whereupon he said something like “I’ll offer the draw before either of us make any more mistakes!”. It was a fair comment and Dave was right to accept the draw. ( ½ - ½ ).

Martin Blasczyk (out-graded by 33 points) was next to finish. He got a good position out of the opening against Mike Haslinger and for a while looked like he might break through his opponent’s defences. Mike, however, had other ideas and locked him out at which point a draw was agreed. (1-1 after two games).

Tom Webb (out-graded by 19 points) had an exciting match against David Colbourne. Both players had chances but the other always found answers and in the end a third draw was agreed (1 ½ - 1 ½ after 3 games).

I also had an exciting game with James Clarke playing the Black side of the Benko (I was out-graded by 15 points).

The position was very tense for a long while but after the opening exchanges James managed to create weaknesses in my defence. A timely, central pawn push looked for a while like it would rip me apart. However, I managed to get away with dropping only  a pawn (leaving me two pawns down after the initial Benko sac). There was no doubt that James was better at this point but I had managed to create counter-play against his a & b pawns. Also, James was beginning to run into time-trouble. My Knight came to the rescue  and in an unclear position we agreed a draw by repetition (2 -2 after 4 games).

Natasha (out-graded by a massive 54 points) played out of her socks, taking the game to Michael Barooah. At one point she looked better but over-pressed for the win which wasn’t quite there at that time. Michael won material and with it the game. (3 – 2 to Formby after 5 games).

Mike Williams (out-graded by 29 points) looked like he was holding his own against Gareth Haslinger. Not to be though. Gareth generated powerful Queen-side play which eventually won him material and the game. 4 – 2 to Formby and with only one game left the match result was over for us. But not the excitement! Top Board, Luke Boumphrey (just out-graded but only by 6 points) and Dave Williams had their usual tense battle, both going all out for it. Luke won the exchange but this cancelled down to a tricky end-game where Luke had a single Rook pawn and a Rook against Dave’s Bishop and Rook & Bishop pawns on the opposite wing.

Luke said afterwards that both sides made errors and in the end the game should have been drawn but for all the world it looked as if the draw was the only outcome anyway.  I’ve no idea what errors were made but be that as it may this was a great exhibition by Luke who managed to trade his Queening pawn for Dave’s Bishop before picking off the runaway pawns on the other wing. It was a close-run thing but beautiful to watch!

Final score 4 – 3 to Formby 1. Congratulations to them for winning the title and promotion to the top flight.

Atticus 3? Sadly (for us) Southport managed to win 4 – 3 against Widnes so next season will find us playing Division 3 chess.

Nonetheless, great performance team, certainly on the night but also throughout the season.
