This match was a lot closer than the final score suggests.

Starting with a default on Board 6, a solid draw from Chris and a very nicely played attack by Derek gave us the edge. So, at the halfway stage it looked like we would have a comfortable victory. However, it soon became apparent that both Liam and Steve were under a lot of pressure and that Sanjoy would have a hard fight to save his position.  It was only towards the end of the evening that matters were resolved in our favour. Liam was able to use his better endgame technique to secure a good victory in an ending with the same coloured Bishops, the advanced position of his King being crucial. Sanjoy, showing Houdini like properties, mounted a tricky defence based on an advanced pawn that was threating to queen. The resulting position, which was agreed as drawn,  was quite complex and a number of different setups were possible (Rv2R; Qv2R & RvR). Last to finish was Steve who hung on and managed to generate some counter play, leading to a nice win.

I would like to thank all those who have played for Atticus 4 this season    John Lawton

The evening started badly as we had to default on Board 6, compounded when Nigel touched a Knight that was defending a critical square and had to move it, forcing an immediate resignation. So we were very quickly two down.

However, the situation was somewhat relieved when my opponent dropped a piece and I was able to use the extra material to force a win. Chris and Liam both agreed draws in very unbalanced positions. This left everything up to Sanjoy and once again he delivered, he is having a really good season and is our top scorer. In this game he obtained a very strong Knight which he used to put his opponent under a lot of pressure, finally winning a piece with a very nicely spotted tactic. So all in all both sides were happy to split the points. JOHN LAWTON(CAPT)

Atticus 4 travelled to Meols on Tuesday night to take on a strong Hoylake 2 side, we were  outgraded on all boards and despite a determined effort lost. Chris again played very solidly and kept up his record of splitting the points in all his matches, this is despite often being significantly outgraded. My opponent attacked from the start leaving a very unbalanced position. In order to promote his attack he sacrificed the exchange twice, luckily for me the attack proved to be unsound and when the smoke cleared I had a large material advantage. Liam fought hard but went down to Mike Stoddart. Martin was a little unlucky as he inadvertently touched his King in a solid position and had to move it. Unfortunately this led to a significant disadvantage and he ended up with a lost position. Sanjoy could have taken a draw, protecting his strong start to the season but played on for the good of the team, losing when he misjudged a small tactical ploy by his opponent. Steve was again last to finish, at one stage he looked to have a nice initiative and a dangerous passed pawn. However, his opponent managed to neutralise this and stop the pawn, finally managing to force one of his own through.

A great win for Atticus 4 v Waterloo 2 away in Division 2, 3/10/12

Despite being well out-graded, Atticus 4 put up a tremendous performance to beat a very useful Waterloo 2 Team. Maybe the team took inspiration from the Atticus 3 win against Widnes on Monday night. After some quick wins for Nigel, Steve and Derek, Martin Blasczyk (Captain) secured a very valuable draw to make certain the team could not lose. Steve Philp and John gave some solid performances to provide 2 more draws and also an excellent first victory for Sanjoy on his recent return to the Club.
