Congratulations to Formby for winning this vital fixture and taking this years 7200 title. We had to win by a score of at least 3-1 and hoped board count then worked in our favour. Unfortunately Jac Thomas wasn't available falling ill at the last moment.
An early loss by Ben meant we had to win the remaining games.
Artur looked to be well ahead but it was always going to difficult for James to change a slightly inferior end game into a win. I felt I had a great position and confident of the point but then slipped up! This meant a draw soon followed between Dave Williams and James Rothwell.
Thanks to all the players who took part this season particularly Tom Webb and Sanjoy who were not available for this one.

Atticus 2 moved through to the Final of the John Ripley Cup with a 3.5-2.5 victory over Aigburth.
Atticus were lucky to be able to call upon Giovanni Sala following the late withdrawal of David Odunaiya.
A couple of early draws saw some of the team heading to the bar to catch up on the Liverpool v Everton match!
Sanjoy seemed a bit out of sorts following his long weekend at the Blackpool Congress, in the other games Jon Woolf appeared to have a good position in the middle game against Ben and Steve Lee had the edge against Jac Thomas. Giovanni and Ian Campbell always seemed level and looked likely neither player would be able to get any advantage. With the loss on board 5 we were always going to need a win on boards 1 or 2 to go through on board count. Ben managed to turn things around in his game, so the game between Jac and Steve was crucial. Both players were castled on opposite sides with their Kings likely to be exposed. Steve looked favourite with more time on the clock however Jac managed set up a nice tactic to save the position and give us a somewhat fortunate victory. The team will now face either Liverpool or Atticus 1 in the Final.

A very intense night of chess saw the top 2 teams in Division 1 fight it out to take the premier position. Liverpool coming out on top with an conclusive 5-2 victory. With 3 matches to go this now makes them favourites to take this years title.
Both sides had very impressive line-ups with FM and professional coach Jonathan Blackburn and Giovanni Sala joining the Atticus Team.
Liverpool recruiting the European Junior Champion Ukrainian Svyatoslav Bazakutsa, Svyatoslav has recently recorded a score of 6.5/8 in the Hastings Open. A special mention should go to Emily Vernon the Principal of Liverpool North Academy for bringing him along.
Atticus generally held their own on the higher boards but were struggling a bit lower down. Steve Kee maintained his push for player of the season with a draw against Roger and also fine draw for Jonathan against IM Gary Quillan. Giovanni was straight back to his best with a win over Colin Horton.
The team will now have to rely on Liverpool slipping up to have any chance of retaining the title this year.

The Northern Counties Chess Union (NCCU) runs competitions between its affliate members at Open, u2050, u1850, u1650 and u1450 level.
This year Merseyside have entered a team at u1850 against teams from Cumbria, Yorkshire and Manchester.
Our first match was away to Cumbria at the Crown Hotel, Eamont Bridge, Penrith - a picture postcard kind of place.
To say it was a challenge to muster together a team would be an understatement, yet against all odds we managed to arrive at 1pm with eleven good men and true (one default) to commence battle.
We had a good mix of players, with six of the ten MCA clubs represented by at least one player.
Although we were outgraded by an average of 130 ELO points per board, we gave a good account of ourselves. Indeed at one point, we were 3-2 ahead (3-3 including the default), with standout performances from Martin Cockerill (Wallasey), Phil Ramsey (Southport), John Grady (Formby) and Steve Farry (Wallasey).
In the final analysis, we succumbed to a defeat by 8 boards to 4, yet it was an enjoyable event and one that hopefully brings more regular participation from Merseyside in such competitions.
Our next fixture will be at home to Yorkshire at an as yet undisclosed date in the new year.
