The final match of the season for both teams was at LCC's new venue, a pleasant, spacious room in The Vines, on a humid evening in the town centre. Both teams were aiming to finish in second place to a rampant Hoylake side. Yet, even our prospective champions had many narrow wins, demonstrating how this division is becoming more competitive by the minute!

LCC's strength, particularly on the lower boards, was again in evidence last night, and Jim and Ben must be wondering whether there was some confusion over the board order, as they both fell to losses against very strong opposition. It was great to see David Odunaiya make his first appearance of the season, but perhaps even his 'magic' was a little rusty as Dave's position became very cramped leading to defeat. Mike saw the bright side, turning down a few draw offers before his position decided to betray his optimism. Chris enjoyed a fairly quick draw although he too was outgraded.

Tom squeezed a win against an opponent with quite an impressive haul this season, and Dave Lawson likewise befuddled his very capable opponent. My game against the impressive WFM Maria Rodrigo ended in a theoretically drawn position, after both sides had held the upper hand at some point.

So, a promising return to the top division for LCC, and another season of excellent competitive chess draws to a close.
