No, you aren't suffering from double vision! Last nights match was a 'double-header', the first six boards also counting as the semi-final of the John Ripley Cup. Yours truly got the team off to a flying start when, having arrived at what I thought was a promising position, my opponent found the elegant 33...Bf6!! See? You have no idea of the position yet it still seems mightily impressive doesn't it? Well it was news to me too, as it forced an almost immediate resignation. This gave me the time to assess the situation on the other boards....plenty of it. Tom seemed to be haemorraging pawns without enough compensation, Brian seemed to be grimacing under constant pressure, Andrej's position was equal, David's game looked a dead draw, and Giorgos was a pawn up. It looked like it was time to write that 'we decided to focus only on the league' as our cup obituary.

Surely enough, Tom's resignation shortly followed mine, and Brian was relieved to emerge with a draw. However, Andrej had skilfully created a clear advantage which led to the win, and Giorgos had played his endgame well, using a succession of zugswangs to steer home his extra pawn. This meant that the result of David's game was critical. The likely drawn outcome would see Formby through on board count. Not for the first time, our 'Miracle-Man' did it again – finding a mating net as his unfortunate opponent's clock was running down.

So, hat's off to Formby, who were most sporting opponents, but Atticus 2 manage to sneak into the JR Final.
