The evening when The Champion's League started saw Atticus play their own version – Hoylake/Great Meols have been the Wirral champions for the last two years, and outgraded us on every board, so the evening was going to pose a real challenge..

However, a snapshot of all the boards taken after 90 minutes may have persuaded bookies to offer a cash-out on an Atticus victory! I was a pawn up with control of the d file against Dave, Brian had arrived at what seemed like a crushing position, cramping Mike's pieces. Jim's pieces were ominously circling around his opponents kingside. Tom launched an early wing attack which may have took his opponent aback somewhat, and had arrived at a position with perhaps more potential for expansion than Tim's. Luke's game seemed to centre on tactics, and it seemed most anything might happen.

Then, Tom's opponent offered a draw, which Tom accepted, a fine result in a comfortable position. Jim attacking instinct led to an error unfortunately, and this duly cost him the game. Brian looked destined for victory, emerging a piece up in the endgame – sadly, the extra piece was a bishop which did not cover the queening square in a K,B,RP v K deadlock; still a fine performance by Brian though. My own advantage fizzled out into a drawn position, though it was probably a fair result. Luke became a bit adventurous with his rook stalking pawns and it ended up being trapped.

So, our debut in the Wirral 1st division was a defeat, but I believe there will be many exciting matches to come.
