Quite a close match this one with all players competing well.

Tom Webb and Scott Bradshaw cancelled out to a draw after an early exchange of Queens. Tom never really looked in trouble and appeared to have the edge but with the other games looking good he took a draw for the team.

My own game against Brian Jenkins was hard fought and, again, with an early exchange of Queens the draw looked favourite. I had doubled f-pawns and had forfeited the right to castle so perhaps Brian thought he was having the better of it. However, I had set up a strong fortress and felt pretty comfortable. The game turned on one small slip by Brian which allowed me to win a pawn and the initiative. Converting to a win was no easy task and Brian made life as difficult as he could for me before going under.

James Rothwell had what looked like an exciting game against Peter O’Driscoll. James had three pawns for the piece but both sides were active so all results were possible. However, James held firm and his advancing pawns eventually carried the day.

Mike had a difficult time of it against Graeme Solomon who managed to do enough to win.

So a good result for us and the rearrangement of fixtures means that we have to do it all over again in two day’s time!

This was a close match that could have gone either way.

James Rothwell drew a closely contested game with Steve Lee.

Mike Williams lost to Dave Pearcey but after the game felt he ought to have got something out of it.

I had a tense game with Tony McNamara but managed to break through on the Queenside to take the full point.

Howard Sleeman was worse for much of his game but clawed his way back into it to secure the draw. At that point Howard was better and poised to win a piece but with little time left on the clock he settled for the half-point.

Well played team!

A close match which we might of won but which we never really looked like losing.

James Rothwell and Mike Williams both cleaned up on the top two boards. My own run of poor form continued and I went down to Gareth Ellis after get lost in the opening (again!). Howard was winning his game but slipped up at the end.

Although all games were drawn this was a very exciting match. All of the games were fighting draws where the outcome of each was not clear until the very last.

My game finished first and although I went into an endgame the better, Tony demonstrated just why Rook and pawn endings are so difficult to convert.

Howard had a good position against Robert but was unable to break through against a resilient defence.

Mike had a very tight game against Dave and for a while the position remained level. Mike appeared to gain the upper hand when he won a pawn but Dave found resources, eventually trapping Mike’s Bishop. However, Mike got more pawns for the piece and was eventually able to cancel down to a draw.

James and Steve slugged it out to the end. James sacked a Bishop hoping that his extra pawns would be sufficient for the win. Steve, meanwhile will have thought he had winning chances of his own until he had to give the Bishop back, leaving a level Rook and pawn ending.
