A tight match and for a long time one that looked as if we would get something from. In the end, however, the resilience of Aigburth’s top boards proved just that little bit too much and was enough to get them past the winning post.

Dave Hurley drew in a position in which he looked better but he felt there was not enough advantage for the win.

My own game was very sharp and we reached a position where a repetition of moves appeared necessary for either of us to avoid coming off second best.

Tom Webb tried hard but in vain to break down Will Cook’s solid defensive strategy.

Howard Sleeman also agreed the draw in what looked like an equal position.

At this point we looked quite good and although the top three games were tight I thought we might get at least enough to draw the match. However, although Luke Boumphrey picked up a draw we went down in the other two. Both Mike Williams and Mark Wadsworth felt they had something there but Graham Lilley and Dave Pearcey each managed to find enough resources to claim their respective wins.

All the same, this was a well-contested match and the team put in yet another good effort despite the result.

MATCH RESULT

2 ½ - 4 ½

A great result for Atticus 3 last night. In fairness, Widnes 2 were not quite at full strength but they put out a strong team nonetheless and we did well to win.

As usual it was a good team performance and everyone chipped in to get the result.

Tom Webb was first to finish taking a quick draw to set the ball rolling. At the time both Dave Hurley and me were looking good so the draw made sense in an unclear position where Tom had a slight edge but no obvious way to convert and lots of ways to go wrong.

I followed up fairly soon after with a win in a Kings Gambit opening where I always felt comfortable.

Unfortunately, Dave, having reached a promising position, dropped a piece and was always struggling after that. He fought on gamely, making his opponent work for the win, but was unable to turn the tide.

Still, the rest of our games looked promising and I had hopes for the team getting at least a draw on the night.

When Mark won my optimism rose and now a win looked a distinct possibility.

Luke had an exciting game against Paul Coughlin. He won on time in the end and now the draw was assured. Mike Williams immediately offered the draw (for the team) in a position where he was better. Had the position been reversed I know Mike would have played on trying to get something for the team. Mike Connor, however, was not minded to do this and when he agreed the draw the match was won for us.

Howard, who had always looked solid against his opponent, had reached an interesting endgame position which, nonetheless, looked drawish (although, if anything, Howard was slightly better).

With the match result decided both players agreed the draw.

So it was a good night for us and means we now have 3 wins from 5 games which is fantastic.

Well played team and long may it continue.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

This was a hard-fought match with everyone having a go to do their bit. In the end Liverpool 2 proved too strong but there wasn’t much in it.

Luke had a good game and was in with winning chances. His opponent defended well. In a complex position Luke missed what appeared (in analysis) to be the winning continuation and had to be content with the draw.

Mike had his usual tough game on Board 2 and looked like he might get something out of it. However, the position was not altogether clear and, with the match already lost, Mike agreed the draw since by then he was in considerable time pressure.

Mark played valiantly against Dave Leeming and may well have been able to ensure the half-pint. However, by then the draw would not have been enough to save the match so he tried to force a win. Dave as he so often does in his games, found the defence to Mark’s attack and in the end managed to secure the full point but it was a brave performance by Mark all the same.

Howard and Ian Stephens got into an interesting looking position which for a while looked double-edged. Ian however managed to marshal his pieces into a strong position from which he duly won.

In my own game I was fortunate enough to come out of the opening into an early middle-game position which enabled me to win a pawn. My pieces were just that little bit more active than my opponent’s. He defended well but could not stop me forcing an exchange down of pieces leaving me with a won pawn ending. Still, Zack continued to play well and almost succeeded in locking the position. However, I always had a free move to ensure that I could maintain the opposition of Kings and that was enough to win the game.

Tom came out of the opening in control and looked like he should win. Unfortunately, he over-pressed his clear advantage at just the wrong moment which allowed his opponent a tactic which forced a draw by repetition. Tom will be disappointed by the result but there was much in his game that was good and he shouldn’t feel too disheartened.

I’m not sure what happened in Dave’s game but I suspect that his loss was due to lack of match play this season. He will only get better!

So, well-played team and despite the result this was a good performance.

MATCH RESULT

After several postponements and one default win, Atticus 3 finally got to play their first match of the season!

Howard and Dave were unavailable but Chris Wentworth and Steve Burge thankfully stepped in for them.

Wallasey fielded their strongest team to date this season so it was always going to be a tough match.

Luke finished first after agreeing a quick draw. My own game with Leon soon followed. We have had many sharp tussles over the years and this game was no exception. There was plenty of play left in an unclear position, but it had that feel about it that whoever went for the win would lose (hence the draw was agreed). Leon was probably better but, as I say, the position was unclear and double-edged.

Mike seems to have the hex on Phil Owen and when Phil dropped a piece the outcome was inevitable with resistance being futile.

Chris and Mark both had closely contested games which were eventually drawn.

Steve got into difficulty against Graham Carr. He fought on manfully in a lost position but in the end Graham’s material advantage was too much.

So it went down to Tom Webb and Viv Oldham. Tom always looked comfortable but Viv set up a defensive fortress that seemed hard to crack. However, Tom played a patient game eventually making his better pawn structure and significant space advantage tell in the endgame to take the win, both for himself and the team.

This gives us 2/2 wins and joint top (on points) with the others all having played at least one game more than us. Long may it continue.

A great team performance and thanks to all who took part.

Our final game of the season was something of a crunch match. We were level with three other teams on 8 points and Southport were propping up the division with 7 points, They were playing Widnes 2 at home on the same night.
