Atticus 4 Travel Well

There may well be higher profile fixtures as the season unfolds, but this one seemed to come with just a sprinkling of stardust...

Atticus 4 travelled together in good spirits (and even brought three travelling supporters) to Wallasey for a match where both sides fielded a combination of experienced hands and young tyros.  On paper it looked to be a tight contest, and the final result does not reflect how keenly contested most of the games were.

Chris sealed the first point for the team getting the night off to a good start.  On board 3 Martin opted for a Semi-Tarrasch yet after the unusual but playable 5.Bf4 found himself on the wrong end of some sharp tactics.  John's aplomb in finding mate in 5 from move 18 gives further warning of the potential of this fast improving player.

Nathan was next to finish in an up and down game that looked lost, then salvageable and finally decisive in our favour.  Steve Winstanley and Natasha both gained creditable draws, effectively sealing the match, the former in a reverse Carlsbad structure where a peace accord broke out late in the evening yet early in the middlegame, the latter deep into the endgame against a Hedgehog.

The pièce de résistance however was the competitive debut of fourteen year old Alfie Melia, against relative novice at this level (and incidentally my pupil), Saul Marks.  A wild game of back and forth devolved to a knight v bishop endgame, with Alfie having doubled f-pawns in a kingside 4 v 3 majority versus Saul's passed c-pawn.  The composure both players showed in a balanced and subtle endgame does them both great credit, yet the chess gods decreed there would be a winner...and it was Alfie.  We will see much more in the future of this talented young man.

So a breathless evening drew to an end, at a venue where it has always been a pleasure to play.  Wallasey will pick themselves up and dust themselves down, while Atticus 4 will move onward and upward, sending the fans home happy!

A match that appeared to start well for us quickly turned to dust once the Wallasey C players got into their stride.

I had the better of the opening against Mark Spriggs but whilst it was difficult for him to get anything more than the half-point I could not find enough to convert to a win.

Dave Hurley, back after a prolonged and forced absence, started well enough against the resolute Duncan Rennie. However, Duncan’s position remained solid and eventually he found a way to break through for the win.

Tom Webb looked like he was enjoying himself against Ed Taylor but will have been disappointed to come away with nothing after Ed found an exchange sacrifice which turned the tables at a stroke.

Mark seemed to be doing well enough from the outset but somewhere down the road he lost material and Alan Jackman assumed control from there.

Howard Sleeman appeared better against Colin Dougherty but in the end had to be satisfied with the half-point.

Steve Winstanley never really got going after losing a piece early on. He battled on gamely but really there was only ever going to be one winner.

So… something of a drubbing but it was good to see Dave back in action and our team back to its original starting 6. Hopefully, this will continue to the end of the season but sincere thanks is extended to Mike Williams who has (and continues) to always make himself available when needed.

For a long while it looked like we would get something out of this top of the table clash. I had a fairly comfortable game against Stuart Smiley but could get no more than the half-point. However, we were looking good on the bottom bords so I was quite happy. When Mike Williams and Mark Wadsworth also picked up draws (Bds 1 & 2 respectively) I was quite hopeful that we might win the match.

It was not to be though. Gradually, Wallasey B began to push back against the tide. Howard and Rick Purcell played out a very interesting game. Rick went material down but got considerable counter-play. With Howard threatening Mate in one for several moves Rick held his nerve and managed to negate the threat, winning back material to boot. This proved sufficient for the win.

Steve Winstanley also had a strong position until he walked into a fork which cost him material. He, too, found counter-play but it was not quite enough and Brian found the resolute defensive moves which assured him of victory.

Tom Webb and Ken Jones played out a close fought encounter but the Wallasey player managed to gain a positional advantage that eventually won him a central pawn which, in the end, proved to be enough for the win.

Wallasey deservedly won the match and have now leap-frogged us to go top of the table   REPORT JIM WISEMAN

Atticus 4 played White on the Even Boards.

As with all their teams, Formby 2 put in a fighting performance. In the end they managed to halve the points after Atticus 4 had made the early running.

Robert Owen came unstuck against me after he miscalculated a Rook sac which failed to deliver. Although it was early days the other games looked favourable for Atticus and, on the strength of this, Mike Williams offered the draw against Paul Jordan which was accepted.

Dave McKee proved too strong for Howard Sleeman whilst Mark Wadsworth, unable to capitalise on an early advantage against Mike Barrett, had to be content with the draw.

Steve Winstanley slipped up towards the end of his match which turned the game around giving Bob Greaves the win.

This left Formby with a 3-2 advantage. However, the final game always favoured Tom Webb and his opponent, John Grady, was unable to prevent him from taking the full point, thus levelling the match.

Another excellent team performance which, at the half-way stage, takes us 2 pts clear and with a narrow board - difference advantage over our nearest rivals (Wallasey B) at the top of Division 3.

I had what I thought was a close game against the ever improving Luke Maher. However, I doubt if he’ll read it that way as he worked towards a pretty little combo that left me dead in the water!

Mike Williams felt that the other games were going our way and was content to take the draw against Dave Leeming as a consequence.

Tom Webb got a big advantage out of the opening only to see much of it evaporate before his eyes as Sean Robinson fought his way back into contention. However, Tom managed to maintain the edge and then use it to force his way home with a very satisfying finish.

Mark Wadsworth had what appeared to be a close game against Bashar Rovezi but had enough in the tank for the win.

Howard Sleeman, meanwhile, wrapped his game up after winning Peter Mellors Queen.

Steve Winstanely had a fine end game victory over Barbara Novak.

Off to a good start in Division 3

Our opening match of the season went well with a solid performance from everyone and two excellent games by Tom Webb and Steve Winstanley.

Formby as always were very competitive and the result went down to the wire. It was finally decided in our favour when Tom Webb’s long-term pressure against John Grady was turned into material advantage and the game.

Our next match is at home on 23rd September against Wallasey B.

We were not at our best tonight despit good performances from Mark Wadsworth, Mike Williams and Tom Webb. Natasha, too, had an exciting game which could have gone either way. Howeve, I under-performed and my opponent was quick to capitalise on my errors. Steve. too, thought he should ave done better. All the same, full credit to Wallasey B who did what they needed to and we just have to accept that on the night we were seond best.
