Usually, the team captain will peruse the action on the other boards, both from a team perspective, and out of interest pending a future match report. However, I was all too aware that my own position was more than perilous, as Mick quickly gained the exchange and it looked like I might soon have plenty of time on my hands. From the little I gathered, on board 1 John looked at least equal, board 2 was.. complex, board 4 was controlled from Andrej's point of view, board 5 was.. flexible in the best Lawson-esque sense, board 6 looked comfortable for Dave. Then I returned and fortunately managed to turn things around. In the end, the grades told the story I guess. See you in the final! Report Steve Kee

The Vines ('The Big House') set the scene for what was truly a big match! Surrounded by distinguished-looking gentlemen, who seemed fascinated by the drama of chess - I am referring to the surrounding portraits of course.
The results began and ended with drawn games, with the finale on board 3 becoming the focus of all. On route we had Dave James' advantage gradually slipping away as Ian reached equality to draw. Then Dave Lawson demonstrated his often astonishing theoretical knowledge with a little-known gambit to land his opponent's king in difficulties which proved fatal. Then board 1, which seemed on the surface to be heading for a draw, saw Charlie capitalise on a queen exchange to simplify to a won endgame. Next was a fine victory for Steve Lloyd over Luke Boumphrey, who seemed to run out of ideas at some point. My game on board 2 seemed to be progressing nicely until I tried to make one pawn ahead become two, and in short order fell for the sharp awakening of a rook sac to force instant resignation! Ouch.
So, we were left with a penalty shootout on board 3 - if Andrej drew we would go through on board count, but did Andrej know this? Marek gained a pawn, but there was some overloading of his major pieces which enabled Andrej to win it back. As the spectators circled in closer to the board and the players became painfully aware of the clocks of doom, a draw was agreed, and a fitting result for both players under great pressure. In fact, a fine performance by all concerned on both teams, .
Don't be misled by their grades, these Liverpool youngsters are proving to be a match for anyone. Report Steve Kee

Some sad news has reached the Club today with the passing of Professor David Roberston, David was a founder member of Atticus and played for the Club for many years winning numerous MCA League Titles under Captain John Carleton. David was the instigator and main organiser of the European Chess Championships in Liverpool in 2008. Our thoughts are with Laura his wife and his family and friends.

Atticus 1 welcomed back new Captain John Redmond on board 1 tonight. The team put in an inspired performance and deserved their win against joint Division 1 leaders Atticus 2. Despite the loss Atticus 2 remain on top of the League on board count but this could now make the battle for first place more interesting for some of the other MCA teams in the second half of the season.

A great victory on Monday Night for Atticus 4 over second place Formby. The return to the team of Geoff Cannon and Steve Philp helped to strengthen the team. Captain on the night was Howard Sleeman. Chris Wentworth is now listed for the Atticus 3 team.

Atticus 2 returned to action on Monday night against a useful Liverpool line-up. The team needed a win to get back on top of the League on a level points score.
The team did not disappoint and in some really exciting games the players probably gave their best performance of the season.
Wins For David Lawson, Andrej Stancak, Sanjoy Banerjee and a return to form for Luke Boumphrey. A useful draw for Brian Ewart.
The 2 Steves fought really hard until the end but just lost out in very close encounters.

The Cross Keys will reopen it's doors to the Club next Monday, Tom Webb's 6000 League team will be in action on the night.
Also of interest to all players is the new monthly ECF grading database, all your matches up until the end of December should now be included and this will be updated on a monthly basis. If you are not included on the list please contact Steve Kee or Chris Wentworth.

All your membership fees should also have now been paid to them. The Club Membership fee includes your ECF Membership Fee and you need to be a member of the ECF to compete in the MCA League.
Some good news is that Club Chairman John Redmond will be returning to the Club shortly and will be taking over the Atticus 1 Captaincy, their first match is not until January 31st.

Magnus Carlsen has won the game today and defended his title with 7½ -v- 3½. Was it a good match? I would say, more or less. Nepo made some blunders and "donated" games to Carlsen, or should I say Carsen exploited every weakness of Nepo and his win is well-deserved. You may replay these games and make your own mind:

For me this tournament was by far not as interesting and as fascinating as the legendary battles betwen Fischer and Spassky, Karpov and Kortschnoi (alias "Victor the Terrible" or "Old Shatterhand") ,Karpov and Kasparov...
"Tempora mutantur" (Times are changing) and FIDE changed the rules and so on "to make chess more popular"... So be it.

P.S.: The longest game... reguarding the moves it is game 6 of this tournament (136 moves), but it lasted only 7 hours and 45 minutes. Reguarding the playing time the game David Bronstein -v- Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander, Hastings, 06/01/1954, 120 moves and took 13 hours. At least one of the longest game in chess history.
