Division 1 Atticus 2 beat St Helens 4/11/19

With a number of the Atticus 2 Squad unavailable Chris Wentworth and Steve Burge stepped in. It was also good to welcome back Brian Ewart to the team.

Unfortunately St Helens only had 3 players around to start the match, it turned out they were short of 2 players this meant St Helens Captain Gareth Ellis had to move up to board 2. With a full team this match could have been a lot closer.

On Board 1 Steve Kee seemed to under estimate his opponents opening and this gave Marek the advantage going into the middle game.

On Board 2  Andrej sacrificed a pawn for some good attacking options however Gareth found some good moves to keep the game fairly equal and might have missed an opportunity to turn the tables in his favour near the end. This proved to be a crucial result for Andrej and the team.

On Board 3 Tom Bimpson seemed to be on the defence for most of the game and had little opportunity as Dave Hill  slowly exerted the pressure and break Tom's fine 100% record.

On Board 4  Luke had a fine King side attack which produced a crushing victory.

On Board 5  Brian seemed to be under a lot of pressure from Steve Potter but eventually managed to turn the game around to his advantage.

Default wins for Chris and Steve on Board 6 and 7.

Mobdro to the Rescue 11/3/20

DIVISION 1  St Helens v Atticus 2

We did well to get a decent team together for this match, with at least 4 of our team ardent Liverpool FC Supporters and with over 6 Champions Leagues Finals attended.

This was a new venue for us and very pleasant but unfortunately no live football.

Having always had problems with Virgin media Go,it was Mobdro that provided the live match coverage via mobile phone.

I was able to go for a very pleasant gambit line and soon able to watch the match, followed by a few more early finishes and we had a small team around the phone.

Fortunately Atticus did better than Liverpool with good performances all-around. Andrej had a good draw against his very tough opponent Dave Hill.

Wins for Steve,John and Giorgos and a steady draw for Chris brought home the points

Luke is still leading for player of the season following his draw tonight.

This put the team back on top of the league but it's all very close with 4 teams involved(although Aigburth are making a late run!).

Atticus 2 have unfortunate set back 24/2/20

Atticus 2 can feel a bit hard done by in last night's fixture v Aigburth.

Both teams had useful line ups and Atticus were able to include Luke Boumphrey, who only arrived back from The Irish Bunratty Tournament at 19h05 at Liverpool Airport.  Luke had a nice win against Danny Rowlandson. Brian Ewart also played well against Dave Pearcey. Steve Kee had useful draw against Roger and I thought things were looking good as Tom looked at least equal and Andrej was ahead. Ben had a quick loss and Giorgos looked to have a solid position. However in the closing seconds as can often be the case the match turned around and the points were taken by Aigburth.

With 4 matches to play the team have lost the lead at the top of the Division but still have chances to regain top spot as some very interesting fixtures remain for all the teams involved.

Atticus 2 were able to field their strongest line-up of the season but came up against an even stronger Liverpool team(apparently their strongest in 40 years) with IM Malcolm Pein on Board 1.The Liverpool Team deservedly took the points, Atticus 2 remain on top of the League but now only Board Count.

Luke Boumphrey continued his fine season with a win over Mike Hardman, David Lawson and John Williams coming out with well earned draws. Steve Kee might have got a half point as Malcolm Pein only had 1 second left on the clock as he delivered mate.

Atticus 2 ride their luck! 27/1/20

A very exciting Evening of Chess saw Atticus 2 come out on top with a 4-3 Scoreline, this means the positions at the top of MCA Division 1 were reversed and Atticus 2 now lead by 1 point.

Atticus 1 were without 2 of their top players in John Redmond and David James, this gave the edge to the Atticus 2 team however the result could have been a lot different.

On Board 1 Steve Kee seemed to be ahead out of the opening but as the clock became a factor Charlie Kennaugh used his great experience to turn things around in his favour.

On Board 2 Andrej had a possible edge out of the opening but Jim fought well and posed some problems, eventually in the final frantic minutes Andrej found some great moves to reach a winning position with seconds remaining.

On Board 3 Tom and Nick both tried to gain a lead but their efforts were in vain and hard fought draw was agreed

On Board 4 Luke found himself bravely clinging on in a losing position as James Rothwell played a great game however time became a factor and James had to a agree a draw with less than 90 seconds left. Credit must go to Luke for finding some great resources to survive.

On Board 5  Giorgos and John had a very level game until the end game were Giorgos was able to take over for a vital victory.

On Board 6 Dave and Martin had a very exciting tactical battle in the centre of the board. There were many threats from both sides but Martin had been unable to castle and this gave Dave the opportunity to finally take the lead.

On Board 7  Brian seemed a bit off form as Sanjoy dominated the match and continued his fine season.

A disappointing end to the 1st half of the season for Atticus 2 but credit to last years Champions Hoylake for putting in a great performance. The Atticus 2 Team remains on top of the league with a fine record of 11/14 points. Well done to Luke Boumphrey who won again and has a record of 5.5/7.

The team will now be flying out at the weekend to the wonderful AlphaZero Training Camp before the much awaited  Mega Derby Clash with Atticus 1 on January 27th.

Impressive Victory for Atticus 2 18/11/19

A great result tonight for Atticus 2 in Division 1 against Waterloo. Both teams were missing some players but more critical for Waterloo was the absence of the MCA's strongest player Gary Quillan.

On Board 1 Steve Kee returned from the Preston Chess Congress in good spirits and his performance always had him ahead in this game, his opponent managed to find some good moves along the way but with time running out Steve dealt a crushing blow.

On Board 2 Andrej had a great position and gave little opportunity to Colin Horton as he slowly overwhelmed Colin's defence.

On Board 3 Tom tried his best to get something out of the position but eventually a draw was agreed.

On Board 4 Luke seemed to be on top but his opponent fought back well and with little time remaining was able to force a draw out the game.

On Board 5 Giorgos seemed to be in little trouble and managed to force a fine win towards the end.

On Board 6 Brian had a win right at the end as the clocks ran out but was in a comfortable position by then,Graeme had been on the offensive out of the opening but Brian with some sound play turned things in his favour.

On Board 7 Steve was on top early on against Scott Bradshaw, Scott managed to get some compensation towards the end but was well behind on time and his flag fell after 27 moves.

A great win tonight for Atticus 2 in Division 1. Unfortunately John Williams was ill on the day, thankfully Dave Stuttard was able to step in at short notice and had a great victory taking on Dave Pearcey's Owens Defence.

It was good to welcome back David Odunaiya and Charlie Kennaugh  into action. Charlie has had some notable GM scalps over the years and will be a big asset to the Club. Atticus 1 were missing James Rothwell but overall the combined team grades were fairly close.

On Board 1 Steve Kee tried out his new opening on John Redmond however this used to be one of John's preferred openings and John seemed to play a very agressive line with big pawn pushes on the Kingside, both players had to play carefully as their Kings became exposed. At the end with only seconds remaining on the clock a draw was agreed.

On Board 2 Charlie opened up in his normal aggresive style against Andrej. Andrej seemed well prepared and a hard fough battle went to the final seconds before a draw was agreed

On Board 3  This game saw a very rare defeat for Dave James, Dave appeared to over extend his pawns in the centre and Tom was able to penetrate the position.

On Board 4 This was a close game, Jim went a pawn up and had a advantage however Luke posed many problems and with time running out Jim miscalculated and Luke took the point.

On Board 5 David continued with his normal attacking style and though the game was fairly equal Nick's clock became a factor and eventually his position deteriorated.

On Board 6 The game appeared equal until the middle game were John overlooked that Giorgos was able to win a piece. Despite John's best efforts to make threats, Giorgos held firm for the point.

On  Board 7  Dave and Derek castled on opposite sides of the board, this meant for some entertaining action as both Kings came under attack. However it was Dave who managed to breakthrough first.

The final score was an unexpected 6-1 to Atticus 2.
